About SAICE PMCD
The demand for skilled professionals in project management, construction management, and engineering has reached unprecedented levels.
This trend is evident globally and is acutely felt in South Africa. The country faces a significant shortage of qualified and experienced individuals in these fields, leading to a high demand for project management and construction professionals. Consequently, South Africa struggles to find the right talent to manage and implement numerous projects valued at millions to billions of rands.
A recent global project management survey highlights that the capability for project delivery worldwide is hampered by several common issues. These include the urgent need for improved skills, the expansion of project management competencies, an evolving landscape of responsibilities and roles, and the adaptability to new business models and delivery mechanisms. In response to these challenges, the PMCD of SAICE is committed to supporting its members in enhancing their project and construction management skills. This support aims to bolster the development and progression of project and construction management competencies within the built environment, from project inception to completion across the entire project lifecycle.
The demand for project management and construction skills in South Africa is at an all-time high, driven by the need to implement critical public infrastructure projects.

South Africa’s context adds another layer of complexity to these challenges. The country is currently undertaking numerous public infrastructure projects critical to its economic and social development. These projects span various sectors, including transportation, energy, water, and housing, and are essential to improving the quality of life for South Africans. However, the success of these projects hinges on the availability of skilled project management and construction professionals who can navigate the intricate dynamics of public infrastructure delivery.
Collaboration and knowledge sharing are pivotal in addressing these challenges. There is a pressing need to build a solid foundation of project management principles across the entire public infrastructure delivery value chain. This foundation should encompass all phases of project development, from initial planning and design to execution and maintenance. By fostering a collaborative environment, stakeholders can share best practices, innovative solutions, and lessons learned, ultimately enhancing the overall efficiency and effectiveness of project delivery.
