Andile Mndzebele - SAICE PMCD

Andile Mndzebele

Andile is passionate about integrating cutting-edge technologies and innovative methodologies into construction project management to streamline processes, enhance efficiency and drive sustainable outcomes. Notably, his recent work on the Rail Balloon Construction Project, executed using BIM and digital transformation techniques, highlights the power of collaborative innovation in civil engineering. Andile advises those starting out in construction project management to embrace continuous learning, adaptability, and resilience. As the SAICE PMCD Chairperson, he aims to foster collaboration and innovation, leading initiatives within the Awards & Sustainable Infrastructure Working Group subcommittees to promote excellence and sustainable practices. Outside of work, Andile enjoys watching F1 and MotoGP races, cycling, fishing, and golf. These activities fuel his creativity and focus. He stays updated on industry trends through continuous learning, research, and CPD-related training, often leveraging AI tools.

Peter Davies - SAICE PMCD

Peter is a Civil Engineer with 40 years of international experience in the construction industry, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. He has held various executive positions, notably spending nearly 30 years with Aveng Grinaker-LTA. He currently runs his own company, offering diverse services to the construction industry, and is an alternative dispute resolution practitioner. A career highlight for Peter was constructing a 146 km road in a remote desert area of Ethiopia, from Gewane to Mille – a section of the main road between Addis Ababa and Djibouti. Successfully completing the project required overcoming significant logistical challenges, including an asphalt plant falling into the sea during off loading. 

For SAICE PMCD, Peter manages the Events portfolio, organising online talks, lectures, and site visits for members. He is also involved in planning the SAICE PMCD Conference 2024, scheduled for September.

Hamish Riddet - SAICE PMCD

Hamish has extensive experience in project and contract management, beginning early in his career with the Anglo American civil engineering department, where he advanced to multidisciplinary project management. At AngloGold Ashanti, he served as head of civil and structural engineering, managing a portfolio of projects, including prefeasibility and feasibility studies. During his tenure at TWP/WorleyParsons, Hamish worked as a senior project manager on multidisciplinary projects. Before retiring, he was a construction manager at Jones and Wagener. Hamish is involved in the Awards and Education and Training portfolios for the division. He also presents the Elementary Project Management course, a two-day in-person course offered through SAICE’s Training Academy.

Nadine is passionate about the planning and execution phases of project management, thriving on the challenges of gathering information and ensuring smooth project rollouts. A career highlight was supervising the construction of the Road over Rail Bridge on Sandown Road in Cape Town, where she witnessed the entire process from breaking ground to the first traffic crossing, gaining a new perspective on engineers’ role in society. A dedicated learner, Nadine enjoys acquiring knowledge on diverse topics, from cooking and dancing to work-related subjects. She stays updated by following knowledge-sharing groups and platforms, including social media, newsletters, and podcasts. Nadine advises aspiring project managers to gain an understanding of first principles as quickly as possible, then consistently build on those skills. She finds fulfillment in helping others grow and learn, believing that the strategic implementation in project management allows her to help people thrive in this technical industry.

Taka is a director of Fasford Group and serves as a board member and advisor for various organisations. With extensive leadership experience in executive management and corporate governance, he provides advisory services to private sector organisations, state-owned enterprises, and government departments. Taka believes project managers are not only change agents but also change lives, driving economic growth and improving community quality of life. Reflecting on a recent human settlements project, he marvels at how a barren site transforms into a thriving community within months. In his spare time, Taka is learning golf and progressing well. He is also actively involved in mentoring leaders. To stay updated on industry trends, he reads Civil Engineering magazine. Taka advises aspiring project managers to develop their skills through hands-on experience and guidance from senior project managers. As the PMCD Treasurer and an Exco member, he is committed to delivering tangible value to division members.

Marcus is a highly accomplished professional with nearly two decades of experience in civil engineering, infrastructure development and project management. With a proven track record of success in both the public and private sectors, he has made significant contributions to numerous high-profile projects, leveraging his expertise to drive innovation, efficiency and excellence. He is a respected leader, strategic thinker, and mentor. For the SAICE PMCD committee, Marcus assists on the SAICE Infrastructure Working Group sub-committee where the team is developing the approach paper for the next Infrastructure Report Card.

Steven Kaplan - SAICE PMCD

Steven is a semi-retired operations manager, project manager, and civil engineer with over 45 years of experience. In the last decade of his career, as COO and Acting CEO of SAICE, he was integral in developing strategic plans, enhancing internal processes for efficiency, overseeing administrative functions, and managing operations strategically. His extensive career includes work on numerous multidisciplinary and infrastructure projects, with a highlight being his role as project manager for the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link (Hatfield Station). This project involved a diverse team working together to create an architecturally aesthetic and functionally sound station within a constrained budget. As SAICE President in 2023, Steven focused on the state of infrastructure and the relevance of civil engineering professionals. He engaged with tertiary institutions, emphasising the importance for students to push boundaries and become future leaders. He encourages students and young professionals to seek mentorship and rotational programmes for career development. Steven is passionate about mentoring and guiding students and young professionals in SAICE towards graduation, professional registration and leadership opportunities. He assists with the PMCD’s Awards and Education and Training portfolios, and assists on the SAICE Infrastructure Working Group sub-committee.

Tebogo Modishane - SAICE PMCD

Tebogo’s passion lies in stakeholder management, bringing together parties with divergent interests for a project’s benefit. He has worked on numerous types of projects, including Constitution Hill Bulk Earthworks Lateral Support and Piling; N17 Bridge Jacking; Medupi Power Station Boiler Plant Civil Works; and the ongoing construction of Bridge City Towers in Durban. Outside of work, Tebogo has a keen interest in sports, particularly golf, cycling, and road running. He keeps abreast of interesting, large-scale projects and innovations in the construction industry through various local and international sources. For newcomers to project management, Tebogo advises learning good habits and practices while prioritising registration with ECSA and/or SACPCMP. Tebogo works in the PMCD’s Events and Education and Training portfolios, aiming to attract new members to the division.

Kagisho is passionate about project management because it broadens exposure through multidisciplinary interfaces. A standout project for him was the remedial works on a solution trench for a tailings storage facility. He managed the project from start to finish, ensuring it met design specifications and was successfully delivered to the client. In his spare time, Kagisho enjoys musical instruments and plans to learn the guitar. He also likes playing golf and racing go-karts. To stay current in the industry, he networks with peers and keeps up with industry-related literature. Kagisho advises those starting in project management to clearly define their goals and work diligently towards them, taking the time to learn. He is passionate about helping young professionals utilise the vast range of platforms available within SAICE and PMCD for networking and growth. His goal is to engage as many young professionals as possible with the initiatives planned by PMCD.

The project management triangle guides Gift in managing risk and change, crucial for ensuring a project delivers a quality final product. Her standout project was the Bloemfontein SAPS: Radio Technical Building, completed in seven months despite facing numerous frustrations and delays from consultants. Gift is an avid reader and researcher, particularly interested in artificial intelligence and technology’s role in fast-tracking construction projects. For newcomers to project management, Gift advises passion, commitment, focus, finding the right mentors, and giving back to the community. She emphasises the importance of boldness and morals in the challenging construction industry. As a professional engineering technologist, researcher, and infrastructure engineering and advisory expert, Gift believes it’s crucial for built environment associations to engage with the government on infrastructure budgets to improve infrastructure, attract investors and create economic growth. She advocates for robust discussions and a platform for sharing experiences without intimidation.

Joby Longolongo - SAICE PMCD

Joby is deeply passionate about strategic management, seeing it as the core of project planning. He is most passionate about new technologies and innovations in project management and construction and focuses on leveraging technology to enhance the quality of construction project outcomes. Currently, he is involved in a project renovating roads in the south of Johannesburg, testing a new product set to significantly change road construction. In his spare time, Joby enjoys reading and researching topics related to the African continent. He is actively engaged with ResearchGate and the Sustainable Human Settlement and Construction Research Center. For newcomers to the sector, Joby advises staying focused, considering all details, and managing time effectively. Within the PMCD committee, Joby contributes his strong management skills to organise events for members. He aims to enhance the visibility of PMCD, attracting younger participants to join the team.

Ashwin is passionate about delivering projects successfully in a sustainable and repeatable manner by designing and implementing best practice project management processes and systems. He has worked on large multi-disciplinary projects across the globe, with a standout being a greenfields mine in a remote part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, involving complex logistics and meticulous planning. Outside of work, Ashwin stays busy with household projects, applying his project management and construction skills. He keeps abreast of industry trends by avidly reading about civil engineering and project management globally. His advice to newcomers in project management is to pursue their passion with dedication and gain experience over time. He highlights the wide range of possibilities in the field, suggesting that graduates may not initially be aware of all their options.

Leonard oversees the housing delivery programme for the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements in the Sedibeng Region. A career highlight was his involvement in the infrastructure development and housing delivery for the Boiketlong Mega Project (Lethabong, Sebokeng Ext. 28 and 30). As a project manager, Leonard thrives on the unique challenges each project presents, finding excitement in learning new solutions for dynamic problems. He contributes to the Education and Training portfolio of the PMCD committee, helping to shape the future of project management.

Norman Milne - SAICE PMCD

Norman Milne

Norman is deeply passionate about understanding why projects fail and identifying the critical elements needed for success. A standout project in his career was the expansion of Columbus Stainless Steel in Middelburg, which involved keeping the plant fully operational. He compares this feat to replacing a Volkswagen Beetle’s engine with a Rolls Royce engine while still driving it. In his spare time, Norman is an avid runner and has participated in 25 Comrades Marathons. His advice to aspiring project managers is to recognise that a project involves many stakeholders, each with different expectations of success. Norman leads the PMCD’s Contractual Affairs Sub-Committee, ensuring that contract conditions are fair and equitably allocate risk

Nontobeko Mathenjwa - SAICE PMCD

Nontobeko excels in stakeholder management, believing it is critical to project success. She is an award-winning project management professional, with 16 years’ experience in the built environment. She is a professional construction project manager registered with SACPCMP. Her most memorable project is the upgrading of the R573 Moloto Road, where she honed both her project management and engineering skills. Nontobeko uses LinkedIn to stay current on industry trends and innovations, and recently discovered Excelize’s blog on construction technology trends. She advises newcomers to the industry to embrace challenges and seek mentorship to develop valuable skills. Nontobeko serves on the Young Members and SIWG portfolios within the PMCD committee. She aims to address challenges in the South African construction industry by promoting integrated planning for socio-economic development through stakeholder management.

Debbie Besseling - SAICE PMCD

Debbie Besseling

Debbie has worked as a consultant to SAICE for more than ten years and is the technical divisions administrator for a number of SAICE’s divisions. With her extensive experience in public relations, communications, events management, publishing and social media management, Debbie’s company Idube Media specialises in the more technical fields of engineering and mining. For the PMCD specifically, Debbie works on a number of portfolios including marketing and communications, as well as events and site visits. She constantly strives to raise the bar for the divisions whose aim is serve the members of SAICE, as well as the civil engineering sector at large.
